Questions

Painting Questions Our Articles Answer

The questions that come up most often, with the article that covers each one.

How often should I repaint my house in New Orleans?

Exteriors in this climate generally need attention sooner than the paint tin suggests, because humidity, sun and wind-driven rain all shorten the life of a coat. Our article on repainting exteriors goes through the signs to look for.

What is the best paint finish for a humid climate?

It depends on the room and the surface, which is why the written estimate names the products going on your walls. Bathrooms, kitchens and exteriors are the three places where the finish matters most.

Do I need to strip wallpaper before painting?

In almost every case, yes. Painting over wallpaper traps moisture behind it and the seams show through. Our wallpaper article sets out how the removal is done properly.

Is lead paint a problem in older New Orleans homes?

Homes built before 1978 may contain lead paint, and the EPA Lead Renovation, Repair and Painting Rule sets how painted surfaces in those homes must be disturbed. Our article covers what that means for a repaint.

Should I paint or stain my deck?

Both work, and the right answer depends on the wood, the exposure and how the deck is used. The deck article compares them side by side.

Why does pressure washing come before painting?

Because dirt, chalking and mildew stop paint bonding to the surface. Washing is the step that decides whether the finish holds or peels, which is why it appears as a line item in our estimates.

How much does it cost to paint a house exterior?

It follows square footage, surface condition, the number of coats and whether repairs come first. We do not quote over the phone, because a number given without seeing the property is a guess.

Do you write about commercial painting as well?

Yes. The commercial guide covers phasing, hours and the products used in occupied buildings such as offices, gyms, hospitals and schools.
