Why people call

Why Do Hammond Owners Call a Painter?

Six reasons the phone rings in a railroad town with a brick downtown and 15,500 students.

01

The Repaint Itself Is Reviewed

Painting a building that fronts a public street or alley in the Hammond Historical District needs an application to the Historic District Commission covering appearance, color, texture and materials.

02

A Brick Downtown

The National Register nomination records that 97 percent of the district's structures are brick, and masonry takes a different primer from wood.

03

Two Stories, Every Time

The same nomination puts 82 percent of the district at two stories, so access is part of the price rather than an afterthought.

04

Turnover Near the University

With the owner-occupied rate at 46.0 percent, a lot of property here changes hands or tenants, and a repaint is the fastest reset between them.

05

The Oldest Housing Stock

A 2014 survey documented 89 structures in the Adams-Lillie area, and the city's housing study puts 418 homes citywide at 1939 or earlier.

06

Storefronts That Have to Sell

A commercial front on Railroad Avenue is read from across the street, and the finish is doing a job for the business behind it.

What Makes a Hammond Job Different?

Three things about Hammond that no other city on our list has.

01

Color Goes Through the Commission

In the Historical District, the application covers the proposed appearance, color, texture, materials and exterior design, and no building permit is issued in the district without a certificate of appropriateness unless the governing authority permits otherwise. Your color choice is part of the submission, not a detail.

02

The Hyer-Cate Overlay

A separate preservation overlay covers the single-family homes in the area bounded by West Dakota Street, West Morris Street, NW Railroad Avenue and Arnold's Creek, with a visual compatibility requirement on exterior changes.

03

Pre-1978 Paint

Homes built before 1978 may contain lead paint, and the EPA Renovation, Repair and Painting Rule sets how those surfaces are disturbed.

How Do You Know the Work Is Due?

Four signs a Hammond exterior is due for a repaint, brick and wood alike.

01

Powder on a Painted Brick Wall

Chalking on masonry means the coat has broken down, and painted brick has to be washed and primed rather than just recoated.

02

Blown Joints in Brickwork

Open mortar lets water behind the face, and repointing comes before any coating goes on.

03

Rust Weeping From Metal

A brown stain from a rail, a fastener or a cornice needs the metal treated first, or it comes straight back.

04

Scuffed Walls in a Rental

In rented property, the walls take the wear, and a full repaint between tenants costs less than patching twice.

Local

Why Use a Local Painting Contractor?

Four reasons a Hammond job runs better with painters who already work in these parishes.

01

We Have Seen Your Weather

Crews working these parishes year round know what humidity and wind-driven rain do to a coat.

02

You Meet the Crew

The people who walk the property are the people on the ladder, not a call center.

03

A Return Visit Is Easy

We are close enough that snagging something after the job is a short drive, not a claim.

How it runs

How Does a Hammond Painting Job Run?

Four steps, and in the district, the commission sits between the estimate and the first coat.

01

Book the Visit

Call or send the form. We agree a time and confirm it before we come.

02

Walk the Property

We look at the actual surfaces, inside or out, and note what needs repair.

03

Written Estimate

Scope, preparation, product and price, in writing. No verbal numbers.

04

Prepare, Then Paint

Washing, repairs and priming first, then the finish coats.

Planning

What Should You Decide Before We Start?

Three things to settle before we start in Hammond.

01

Choose the Color Before You Apply

The district application names the color, so the choice happens before the submission rather than on the day the crew arrives.

02

Say Whether It Is Brick or Wood

Masonry, wood and metal each take a different primer, and the estimate should say which is going on which elevation.

03

Book Rentals Around the Term

A rental is easiest to repaint between tenants, and that window is short, so the date goes on the calendar early.

Questions

Hammond Painting Questions, Answered

What Hammond owners ask before the first visit.

Do you paint houses in Hammond?

Yes, across the city, inside and out, and commercial property in the same area.

Do I need permission to repaint in the Historical District?

Yes, if the building fronts a public street or alley. The application to the Historic District Commission sets out the appearance, color, texture, materials and exterior design, and no building permit is issued without a certificate of appropriateness.

Can you paint brick?

Yes, and we will tell you honestly when leaving it bare is the better call. Painted masonry needs washing, any bad mortar repaired, and a primer made for brick.

Do you work on rental property?

Yes. A repaint between tenants is the least disruptive way to reset a rental, and we schedule around the date the property is empty.

Do you cover Ponchatoula and the rest of Tangipahoa Parish?

Hammond is the city we cover in the parish. Tell us the address, and we will say plainly whether it is inside the area we drive to for a free estimate.

Is the estimate really free?

Yes. We walk the property, look at the actual surfaces, and put scope, preparation, product and price in writing, with no obligation to book.

Are you licensed and insured?

Yes, in Louisiana, and the cover applies to commercial jobs as well as homes. Ask us for proof before you sign anything.
